Horror, used as an adjective, describes things that are centred upon or depicting terrifying or macabre events, such as horror stories and horror movies.
Horror fiction is fiction that elicits an overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting; a painful and intense fear; dread; or dismay in the reader.
Horror is an intrusion into our comfort levels reminding us of how little we actually know and understand. It doesn't have to be full of ghosts, ghouls, and things to go bump in the night as its only true requirement is that it elicits an emotional reaction that includes some aspect of fear or dread. Just as our fears and terrors change with time, so too will the definition of horror, not just from age to age but from person to person.
